joy of flight

Grades 1-4; scheduled after school on Wednesday in Room 2308 (computer lab upstairs at the west end); cost is $150 for (10) 1-hour classes.

If another day works better for you, be sure to let Dane know as he may be able to offer the class on a different day.

This one hour after-school class teaches the basics of flight, aviation and space exploration. Activities include designing and making paper airplanes and helicopters, balsa gliders, pop-bottle rockets and gas balloons, and may include a flight simulator, viewing videos and video games.

Content will be varied in each class so that it may be taken multiple times.

world of flight

Grades 4-8; not currently scheduled.

This after-school program teaches more in-depth principles of flight, aviation and space exploration. Activities are tailored to be age-appropriate for each student and may be coordinated with school syllabi. Activities include designing and making paper airplanes, rubber-band powered balsa airplanes, hobby rockets, rotary-wing aircraft and simple hot air balloons, and may include building paper or plastic models of historic aircraft and spacecraft, field trips, flight simulators, viewing videos and video games.

The following World of Flight classes are planned, offered in repeating consecutive order each quarter of the regular school year (3 classes per year):

WORLD OF FLIGHT I - Airplanes

Class covers: airplane types, aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, construction, design, history and current developments; radio-controlled and autonomous flight; careers in aviation; sustainability issues; and more.

WORLD OF FLIGHT II - Rockets and Space Flight

Class covers: rocket types, aerodynamics, propulsion and design; history of space flight and space exploration, current developments and future directions; orbital mechanics; radio-controlled and autonomous flight; careers in engineering and astronautics; and more.

WORLD OF FLIGHT III - Lighter-Than-Air and Rotary-Wing Aircraft (Balloons and Helicopters)

Class covers: lighter-than-air and rotary-wing aircraft types, aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, construction, design, history and current developments; free-flight, radio-controlled and autonomous flight; and more.

WORLD OF FLIGHT IV - Pilot Knowledge

footnotes

Flight Club is still developing so content areas and class descriptions will change over time.

Although certain classes will contain knowledge areas required for the ground school and flight training requirements for a Sport Pilot, Private Pilot or other FAA Airman's Certificate, the instructor is not accredited to provide FAA certified training and the training is intended only as an introduction for possible future FAA certified training.

Students and parents are explicitly informed that this is in no way formal training for any flight operations other than small-scale model rocketry and small-scale model aircraft.

Some limited scholarships may be available.
