Duain says he started using the technique after he developed Parkinson's disease.
" I can't do the realistic work anymore, so I have gone for a more abstract style," Duain said.

When Duain was in high school and college, he "had more credits in art than in anything else." However , art wasn't Duain's first love.  " I had a calling, and I knew I was going to the seminary," Duain said.
After becoming a Lutheran minister, Duain put down his brushes in favor of missionary work. " I was sent to Southeast Asia, first to Malaysia and then to India." Duain said.
"Donna and I had a marvelous time. My daughter was born in India, and my son in a
Chinese clinic in Malaysia."

Aside from teaching one art class at an international school in India, Duain did not paint. He didn't pick up his brushes again until he moved to the Village of Hacienda in 1993.
" I was doing outreach work in poor and rural areas, setting up training programs," said Duain. "I still appreciated art and would acquire art from local artists whenever I could."

He's looking forward to the Summer Art Festival. "This is a major event," Duain said.  "We have a wonderful arts community, a lot of talented artists and teachers. This is a chance for people to see the art, talk to the artist and ask, "How do you do that?" It also is a chance for the artist to get to know one another."

And if you think art is out of your budget think again.  "Many artist will sell cards or smaller prints that the will sign,' Duain said.
